The School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS) Wellness Pavilion, a University of Pittsburgh Community Engagement Center (CEC) in Homewood, has started the Wellness Pavilion Clinic initiative, a partnership with Primary Care Health Services aimed at supporting the health and well-being of the surrounding community.
Starting fall 2024, the Wellness Pavilion Clinic will be offering a range of clinical and rehabilitation therapy services for free. These services will be administered by SHRS program faculty and students training to become clinicians in these fields.
Available Services
Aphasia Therapy: Small and large aphasia therapy groups
The focus of small group therapy will be the life participation approach to aphasia (LPAA), utilizing supported conversation to engage people with aphasia in activities of interest to them and reconnecting them with community. This requires a commitment to come weekly and registration with Chrisa Kravetz, MA CCC-SLP (email: chk247@pitt.edu). The Wellness Pavilion also offers a weekly “large group” support group, with a guest speaker, member spotlight and small group breakout sessions. It is open to people with aphasia and their caregivers and/or loved ones. No commitment required for large group, those participating can come when their schedule allows.
Audiology Services: Hearing evaluations, hearing aid fittings, discussion of results and recommendations
Services include hearing evaluations, the discussion of results and recommendations for follow-up. Audiologists will provide hearing aid fittings, including any troubleshooting, repairs and help with batteries. Information and other resources will be provided to help individuals access no-cost amplified or captioned phones.
Chiropractic Care: Comprehensive chiropractic treatments to support spinal health and overall wellness
Chiropractors will examine to find out which muscles, joints, or nerves are causing an individual’s pain. They might use gentle hands-on techniques to stretch tight muscles and loosen stiff joints, which often relieves pressure on painful nerves. They may also suggest easy exercises to strengthen weak muscles and improve how you move. If needed, chiropractors can arrange for an X-ray or MRI or refer you to another specialist. Maternal Health & Lactation Clinic: Prenatal or new mothers seeking support
The Maternal Health and Lactation Clinic offers individual sessions for prenatal or new mothers seeking support for breastfeeding or bottle feeding, role adjustment and mental health, occupational participation, and balance. Lactation consultation sessions can provide support for breastfeeding challenges (e.g., positioning, latch, pain, oversupply), feeding routines and transitions (e.g., timing of feeds, transition to solids, weaning), return to work plans (e.g., pumping), and infant feeding development (e.g., oral motor skills, sensory regulation, bottle feeding).
Sessions will be held in a private consultation room at the SHRS Wellness Pavilion and can be scheduled in advance or attended on a drop-in basis. A typical 30-minute appointment includes a brief intake process to learn about presenting concerns, assessment of a feed, trial of recommendations, and a plan for how to proceed at home or in future visits if needed.
Kimberly Krebs is an occupational therapist and lactation consultant, specializing in pediatric and perinatal care for mothers and babies. She is passionate about providing accessible community-based care to children and families.
